Etching Hill Women's Institute

Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) is the largest international organisation for rural women and is active in over 70 countries

ACWW has over 400 member societies around the world, including 100 member societies in the UK (almost all UK WI Federations are members)

ACWW has consultative status with five UN agencies including UNESCO and UNICEF

ACWW prioritises funding projects which help women and their families and which are managed by women

Since 1977, ACWW has backed more than 700 projects devised by women, many of them living in some of the most remote and destitute communities on Earth.

None has been on a large scale and very seldom do the grants amount to more than £3,000. But, by recognising and encouraging the women’s spirit of enterprise, ACWW has backed unusual schemes as well as enabling fresh water to flow where previously there was none.

Women from the heart of Africa, the slums of Asia, Eastern Europe, South America, and the islands of the Caribbean and the South Pacific have identified urgent local necessities and the means of achieving them: including raising cane rats for food and orchids for cash. Appeals for cash to fund HIV/AIDS education schemes have shot up in recent years.

Each application is carefully examined by the specialist Projects Committee and, if approved, an ACWW area president monitors the expenditure.
